Why pre-plan?

If you’re like me, you tend to procrastinate from time to time.

After all, why do today what can easily be done another day?

Admittedly, I’ve learned that lesson time and time again, yet occasionally I still fall into the same trap of putting things off.

I once read that procrastination is less about laziness and more about a lack of comfort or confidence. I guess it makes sense…if we fear something, our survival mechanism kicks in to protect us.

This seems especially true when the task at hand forces us to face something we don’t want to face. I can remember putting off physicals with my doctor because I didn’t want to deal with the lecture about diet and exercise!

The same, I believe, is true when it comes to facing end-of-life planning. My grandmother, an otherwise very smart and logical woman, once asked if I thought that having a will makes people more likely to die. I laughed and explained to her that 100% of us – and that’s just about everyone – are going to die without regard to whether we have a will (fact: if you search the web, you will see this is a common question!).

As a funeral director, I have seen first-hand the value of pre-planning – in both my professional and personal life. When my grandfather passed away in 2017, I simply called the funeral home and provided some information regarding our preferred time and date for his services. He and my grandmother, without the pressure, stress and emotion of a death, made all of the “big” decisions in 1988!

Just the other day, our phone rang at 7:15am. On the line was a lady, clearly stricken with emotion, telling me that her dog died some time in the night. I can still hear her saying “I have no idea what to do.”

This is why pre-planning makes so much sense!
